Villamil who directs one of the few Matanzas batá ensembles in the U.S., plays Añá, agbé (guiro), Cajón, Yesá and also plays for Bantú (Palo) celebrations, and also conducts percussion lessons. Villamil was also the subject of a recent book, “Drumming for the Gods-The Life and Times of Felipe García Villamíl, Santero, Palero, and Abakuá,” written by María Teresa Vélez and published by Temple University Press. He has been featured in various scholarly works as well for his exquisite beadwork.
