Brooklyn, New York

Although I have written these notifications on countless occasions to announce the passing of our deceased brothers and sisters, this is the first time I write one to announce a passing that touches me directly. Sadly, I report the passing of my father, Orlando Ramos, Ewín Sholá, who died of cancer on the 15th of January in New York. While I am receiving condolences from my orisha family and friends from all over, for which I will remain eternally grateful, I too must offer condolences to my family, blood-kin and religious.

Ewín Sholá was one of the pioneers of Lucumí religion in the U.S. where he laid seeds that very quickly gave root to an immense branch of the genealogical tree of the Efunshé Warikondó lineage. In the U.S., he was the oldest descendant of the well-known Obá Eladió “papalote” Gutiérrez, Eshú Bí. In Cuba, as well as in the U.S., Ewín Sholá touched many lives in his fifty-five years as an olorisha, leaving behind a great number of religious descendents. I am sure that many of the ones that remain will remember him with gratitude and respect, and will join his family in offering a prayer to orún to accompany and guide his path in his transition and voyage to the other side. Ibá é l’ayént’orún Ewín Sholá.

He will be viewed on January 17th at Ortiz Funeral Home—
2121 Westchester Avenue
Bronx, NY

He will be sent to Miami where his body will be turned over to our mother ilé for its final rest.

Fallecimiento de Orlando Ramos, Ewín Sholá
Enero 15, 2009
Brooklyn, New York
