Es con un gran pesar en el corazón que reporto la noticia de la lamentable pérdida de un gran y reconocido olorisha lukumí, Alfredo Calvo, Obá Tolá quien falleció hoy en su nativa Ciudad de Matanzas. Descendiente de la gran iyalorisha Ma Monserrate González, Obá Tero, Obá Tolá era uno de los pocos alagbás que quedaban en dicha ciudad y un gran conocedor de las tradiciones egbado-cubanas. Su inigualable voz traía no solo sapiencia sino júbilo y energía sagrada a todo wemilere donde hacia su presencia. Su gran conocimiento de orikí para alabar a los orishas y estimularlos a poseer a sus caballos no tenía ni tendrá rival. Con Obá Tolá muere una generación; una era; una conexión a un pasado que pocos han tenido la bendición de experimentar y conocer; un pasado que los pocos que restan que gozaron de esta era de seguro lamentan y añoran como lamentaremos la pérdida de Obá Tolá y añoraremos su presencia cada vez que suene un tambor batá en Matanzas. It is with a very heavy heart that I report the lamentable loss of a great and renowned Lukumí olorisha, Alfredo Calvo, Obá Tolá, who passed away this morning in his native City of Matanzas. A descendant of the great iyalorisha Ma Monserrate González, Obá Tero, Obá Tolá was one of the few alagbás alive in that city and a great repository of knowledge about the Egbado-Cuban traditions. His inimitable voice brought not only knowledge but also joy and sacred energy to every wemilere that he honored with his presence. His mastery of orikí to praise the orishas and stimulate them to possess their mounts was and will remain unrivaled. An entire generation died with Obá Tolá; an era; a connection to a past that few have were blessed to live and know; an era that the few that remain will surely lament and yearn, as much as we shall mourn the loss of and long for his presence every time a batá drum sounds in Matanzas.
